Ardmore Community Newsletter: February 2025

Ardmore Community Newsletter: February 2025

Dear Ardmore Families,

Brrr!  It's getting very cold!

Snow Angels

As pretty and fun the snow has been, the upcoming cold front means students will likely experience discomfort if they stay outside without a jacket, hat, and gloves.  We will move Recess indoors if the temperature dips below freezing.  Please ensure that students are coming to school wearing warm clothes.

The next session of After School Clubs will begin in a few weeks.  Sign Ups are opened and spaces are limited!  Please see below for Club descriptions and sign up links.

We look forward to seeing you all at our Winter Festival at the end of the month!

Sincerely,

Tina Bogucharova-Principal

Yusra Obaid-Assistant Principal

Safety and Inclusion

Safety and Inclusion

The diversity of the Bellevue School District is a key strength of the District and our students, families and staff enhance collective learning and enrich the community. We are committed to a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, families and employees regardless of immigration status. We do not, and will not, collect or share immigration information about any student, family or employee nor provide access to employee or student records or protected information absent proper authorization. This procedure is based on the belief that all students who reside within the District have the right to an education regardless of immigration status.

If you have any questions about the safety of your family related to immigration status, please call us at (425) 456-4700 or email us.  Our BSD Welcome Center at hello@bsd405.org can support you, too. We have a lot of resources from the community.

Know Your Rights: Immigration, Advocacy and Education - Bellevue School District

Here is a summary of important information for families:

  • Warrants Are Required: Immigration officials must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter school property.
  • District Policy Exists: Our school district has a clear procedure (4310.1P) for handling immigration-related situations, prioritizing the safety of students and their families.
  • Confidentiality Under FERPA: Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), schools cannot share personal information about students or their families—including immigration status.  ICE cannot ask schools for students' legal status without a valid court order or warrant.
  • Encourage Planning: Families can create emergency plans, and there are local organizations that can help such as the ones listed on our website: https://lcycwa.org/resources/immigration
  • Contact information: a key part of the planning, is ensuring the school has the most-up-to-date information in the system.

Emergency Contact Updates

Emergency Calls

Please check Parent Vue to see your child's Emergency Contacts.  Are they updated?  In case of emergency do we have 2-3 contacts in addition to you?  This information helps us find safety for your child in the event of emergencies and we cannot find you.

ParentVue App is very useful for Bellevue School District families.  Please let us know if you need help setting this up on your mobile devices.  If you need to know your Activation Code please call the Main Office (425) 456-4700.

3rd Grade Teach Back Event Featuring the United Nations Global Goals

Teach Back 1
Teach Back 2
Teach Back 3

A special shout-out to the 3rd-grade teachers for an amazing teach back even. Thank you to all 3rd grade families who were able to attend. Our kids were so excited to share what they have learned about weather phenomena, ways to combat climate change, and severe storm preparations. Ms. Anderson, Ms. Dawood and Ms. Gaines provided multiple ways for student to represent their learning, including Scratch projects, booklets, and bookmarks.

Ramadan Accommodation Starting March 1st

Ramadan

Early Ramadan Mubarak to families that are observing. Ramadan is practiced differently among families, communities and countries around the world. At Ardmore we want to make sure that students feel comfortable practicing their own family traditions around Ramadan. For some they may be fasting for other they may not. Starting March 1st we will be offering  an alternative space than the lunchroom for student who may choose to fast.  We are ensuring that student will be the lead in making the decision for themselves should they choose an alternative space than the lunchroom.

Safety Drills

School Safety Drills.

Washington state law and Bellevue School District policy require all schools to hold at least one drill per calendar month while school is in session. This month, we will be conducting an earthquake drill and practicing what we would do if we were at school in the event of an earthquake.

In the United States, the recommended actions to take in the event of an earthquake are Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

Drop Cover Hold

Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters such as earthquakes. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.

For more information on earthquakes and general preparedness, you might want to visit the Washington Emergency Management Division (https://mil.wa.gov/personal) or Great Washington ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/index.html) websites. You may also find the https://www.ready.gov/kids site helpful.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Student Health:  Respiratory Illnesses

Respiratory Illnesses

Becoming chilled, wet, or tired does not cause a cold or make a child more likely to catch a cold.

Overview of viral respiratory illnesses in children.

Most of them are the common cold and influenza.

Typical symptoms include nasal congestion, a runny nose, scratchy throat, cough, and irritability.

The diagnosis is based on symptoms.

Treatment aims to relieve symptoms.

Children develop on average six viral respiratory tract infections each year.

Viral respiratory tract infections are typically divided into

  • Upper respiratory tract infections: Symptoms occur mainly in the nose and throat. Viral upper respiratory tract infections may occur at any age and include the common cold and influenza.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections: Symptoms occur in the windpipe, airways, and lungs. Viral lower respiratory tract infections are more common among children and include croup, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia.

Children sometimes have infections involving both the upper and lower respiratory tracts.

Good hygiene is the best way to prevent these infections, and routine vaccination can help prevent influenza.
